Chinese syllables(音节 yīnjié) are composed by initials*(声母 shēngmǔ) and finals*(韵母 yùnmǔ). Finals that can be used alone are also syllables, e.g., ā 阿. Chinese characters are mostly monosyllabic. Very few characters are polysyllables, such as: 兛(qiānkè-old translation of kilogram), 瓩(qiānwǎ-old translation of kilowatt).

Syllable is different from pronunciation. In Chinese, pronunciation has a tone, but syllable does not. Mandarin Chinese has about 400 syllables, and about 1300 pronunciations. There are 394 syllables in HSK 1-6 vocabulary.

* The initial(声母 shēngmǔ) is a consonant used in front of the final. Initial + Final forms a syllable.
* The final(韵母 yùnmǔ) is the part of a syllable after the initial. It consists of one or more vowels.
