Wèi, nǐ zài zuò shénme ne?
Wǒ zài kànshū ne.
Dà Wèi yě zài kànshū ma?
Tā méi kànshū, tā zài xué zuò zhōngguó cài ne.

喂,你在做什么呢?
我在看书呢。
大卫也在看书吗?
他没看书,他在学做中国菜呢。

Hello, what are you doing?
I am reading.
Is David reading too?
No, he isn't, he was learning to cook Chinese food.

语法点: 喂, + Sentence
The Interjection 喂 is often used to say "hello", to draw attention ("hey") or to answer a phone call.
  1. Tā zǒu jìnqù jiào dào:"Wèi! Yǒurén zài ma?"
    她走进去叫道:"!有人在吗?"
    She walked inside and called out, "Hello! Is there anybody in?"
  2. Tā ná qǐ diànhuà shuōle shēng "wèi!"
    他拿起电话说了声 "!"
    He picked up the phone and said, "hello!"
  3. Wèi, zhè shì zěnme huí shì?
    ,这是怎么回事?
    Hey, what's going on here?
语法点: 在/正在 + Verb + 呢 | 没 + 在 + Verb
The adverb 在/正在 + Verb/Verb Phrase + 呢 can express an action in progress.
The negative form is 没(在) + Verb/Verb Phrase, without 呢 at the end of the sentence.
  1. Wǒ zhèngzài chúfáng lǐ zuò fàn ne.
    厨房里做饭
    I am cooking in kitchen.
  2. Wǒ de māo zài shuìjiào ne.
    我的猫睡觉
    My cat is sleeping.
  3. Tāmen méi zài tīng yīnyuè.
    他们听音乐。
    They are not listening to music.

Zuótiān shàngwǔ nǐ zài zuò shénme ne?
Wǒ zài shuìjiào ne. Nǐ ne?
Wǒ zàijiā kàn diànshì ne. Nǐ xǐhuān kàn diànshì ma?
Wǒ bù xǐhuān kàn diànshì, wǒ xǐhuān kàn diànyǐng.

昨天上午你在做什么呢?
我在睡觉呢。你呢?
我在家看电视呢。你喜欢看电视吗?
我不喜欢看电视,我喜欢看电影。

What were you doing yesterday morning?
I was sleeping. What about you?
I was watching TV at home. Do you like watching TV?
No, I don't. I like seeing movies.

语法点: Sentence,Subject (+ Verb) + 呢?
The modal particle 呢 can be used at the end of an interrogative sentence to ask the same question to the other side in the conversation.
  1. .... Nǐ kàn ne?
    ......。你看
    .... What do you think?
  2. "Nǐ hǎo ma?" "Wǒ hěn hǎo, duōxiè, nǐ ne?"
    "你好吗?" "我很好,多谢,你?"
    "How are you?" "Fine, thanks, How are you?"
语法点: Statement + 呢。
呢, as a Modal Particle, can be used at the end of a sentence, indicating that an action or state is in progress.
  1. Wǒ zài lùshàng ne.
    我在路上
    I'm on my way.
  2. Nǐ de wǎnfàn hái rè zhe ne.
    你的晚饭还热着
    Your dinner is still warm.
  3. Xiǎo gǒu zài yǐzi xiàmiàn ne.
    小狗在椅子下面
    The puppy is under the chair.

语法点: Expression of telephone numbers
Telephone numbers are read in a different way than general numbers. They are read as a series of single digits from 0 to 9. The number 1 in a telephone number is often read as "Yāo", and the number 2 is always "Èr" 二, not "Liǎng" 两.
  1. “Nǐ de diànhuà hàomǎ shì duōshǎo?” “82304155.”
    “你的电话号码是多少?” “ 82304155 。”
    "What's your phone number?" "82304155."
  2. Dǎ diànhuà hàomǎ 82304155 dào tā jiā yǔ tā liánxì.
    打电话号码 82304155 到她家与她联系。
    Reach her at home on 82304155.
语法点: Sentence + 吗? | 是 Sentence + 吗?
The particle 吗 can be used at the end of a declarative sentence to raise a question.
  1. Nǐ xiǎng hē bēi chá ma?
    你想喝杯茶?
    Would you like a cup of tea?
  2. Wǒ néng bāng nǐ ma?
    我能帮你?
    Can I help you?
  3. Tā shì běijīng rén ma?
    她是北京人?
    Is she from Beijing?
语法点: Sentence + 吧! | Sentence + 吧。
The modal particle 吧 can be used at the end of an imperative sentence to express a suggestion or command in the soft tone. The exclamation mark is often used at the end. 吧 is always pronounced in neutral tone.
  1. Zánmen huíjiā ba.
    咱们回家
    Let's go home.
  2. Háishì ràng shìshí shuōhuà ba!
    还是让事实说话!
    Let the facts speak for themselves!
  3. Nǐ de yìsi wǒ míngbáile, jiù zhème bàn ba!
    你的意思我明白了,就这么办!
    I understand what you mean, just do it!
