HSK 4 Prepositions

HSK 4 >> Prepositions



In Chinese, prepositions(介词 JièCí) are generally used in front of nouns, pronouns, or noun-phrases to form a prepositional phrase(prep. + n./pron./noun phrase). In the sentence, a prepositional phrase can be used as an adverbial or a complement to indicate time, place, direction, object, purpose, reason, manner, passive, comparison or exclusion.

1. Duìyú 对于 for |about | with regard to | towards 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Duìyú zhège wèntí, wǒ yě méiyǒu dá'àn.
    对于这个问题，我也没有答案。
    I have no answer to this question. 12876
对于这个问题 is put before the subject as an  adverbial  of this sentence.
2. ànzhào 按照 according to 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Ànzhào guīdìng, wǒmen zhǐ duì xuéshēng tígōng zhège fúwù.
    按照规定，我们只对学生提供这个服务。
    According to regulations, we only provide this service to students. 12870
按照规定 is also placed at the beginning of the sentence.
3. tōngguò 通过 through | by means of | by way of | by 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Tōngguò nǔlì, wǒmen kěyǐ huòdé chénggōng.
    通过努力，我们可以获得成功。
    Through hard work, we can achieve success. 12874
通过努力 means "Through hard work". This prepositional phrase is used before the subject to indicate in which way can we achieve success.
4. yǔ 与 with | to 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Tā yǔ tóngxuémen xiāngchǔ dé hěn hǎo.
    她与同学们相处得很好。
    She gets on very well with her classmates. 5392
与同学们 is placed between the subject 她 and the verb 相处.
Please Note that in Chinese most prepositional phrases are placed before the verb as an adverbial in the sentence, but in English they usually appear after the verb.
5. yǐ 以 using | taking | by means of 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Tā yǐ jí màn de sùdù xiàngshàng pá.
    他以极慢的速度向上爬。
    He climbed up at a very slow speed. 12591
以极慢的速度 is a prepositional phrase, meaning "at a very slow speed". It appears before the verb 爬.
6. yóu 由 by |from |due to |because of 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Zhège rènwù bìxū yóu nǐ lái wánchéng.
    这个任务必须由你来完成。
    This task must be fulfilled by you. 12875
由你 is put before the verb 完成, meaning "be fulfilled by you".
7. yóuyú 由于 owing to | as a result of | due to | in virtue of 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Bǐsài yóuyú xiàyǔ ér tuīchíle.
    比赛由于下雨而推迟了。
    The game was postponed due to the rain. 5578
由于下雨 is placed between the subject 比赛 and the verb 推迟.
You can also say: 由于下雨, 比赛推迟了。
8. zài...nèi 在...内 within 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Zhèxiē xuéshēng huì zài 4 nián nèi bìyè.
    这些学生会在4年内毕业。
    These students will graduate within 4 years. 12871
4年 is inserted in the preposition "在…内", meaning "within 4 years".
9. zhì 至 to | until 【HSK-4】prep.
  • Jīnwǎn qìwēn huì jiàng zhì língxià shí dù.
    今晚气温会降至零下十度。
    The temperature will drop to minus ten degrees tonight. 6620
The prepositional phrase 至零下十度 follows the verb 降 as a  complement .
