⬅️ 唐诗 Tang Poems

Wang Han (王翰,687-726 AD) was a poet of early Tang Dynasty. He was famous for his frontier poems. But most of his works had been lost since Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). This A Song of Liangzhou is one of the most well-known Tang poems and selected in the fourth grade text book for primary schools in China. Liangzhou, located in the modern-day city of Wuwei (武威,甘肃,Gansu province), once was the third largest city in China and a major economic center of Tang Dynasty. It was also a very important town on the silk road. Among 2000 frontier poems of Tang Dynasty, more than 100 of them had Liangzhou as the background. Unfortunately detailed historical record about Wang Ha was lacking. It is believed that he was born into a wealthy family and had unrestrained personalities.

Frontier poem was a unique type of poems in ancient China. These poems were dedicated to the scenery and life in northern frontiers. Some of the poems described the splendid natural view north of the Great Wall. Some hailed the bravery and patriotism of the soldiers stationed in the north. And some poems depicted the soldiers and their families' agony and suffering caused by the war. Of all ancient Chinese poems, frontier poems of Tang Dynasty represented the highest level of ideology and artistic quality and the most powerful imagination.
