HSK 4 Conjunctions (既……又/也 VS 不是……而是)

既……，又/也……

The set of conjunctions 既……又/也/ is used to connect words or phrases in a coordinate complex sentence (并列复句). The two parts are usually identical in structure. Both can be either affirmative or negative.

1. 他既不会读也不会写。
2. 他既没工作也没钱。
3. 这家旅馆既舒适又方便。
4. 他既表现了能力又显示了决心。

不是……而是……

The set of conjunctions 不是……而是 is used in a coordinate complex sentence (并列复句). It connects and compares contrasting situations to emphasize the affirmative clause after 而是.

1. 重要的不是赢,而是参与。
2. 墙面不是白的，而是灰的。
3. 这不是我的想法，而是事实。
4. 不是我，而是他该负责任。
